bosco312 (John) and I went to Port Townsend yesterday for a romantic weekend, hoping to find the right rings to give each other to express our love and commitment. We both really wanted rings.

We found the right ring for me at a custom jeweler and he polished John's old ring and amazingly, it matches mine nearly exactly and looks brand new. We walked around town window shopping and looking for a hotel room and stopped at the Palace Hotel. We must have The Look, because the Palace was full but the receptionist recommended the suites at the Tides, complete with balconies, jacuzzis, and king-size beds. ;-) We ended up at the Tides in room 302 and will be going back... it was a touch overzealously decorated but the bed was excellent and the room was luxuriously appointed in every way.

We had dinner at the Fountain Cafe, unfortunately pretty far from the best meal I've ever had there but John said he's willing to try again. After a detour at Safeway for a few things, we headed back to the hotel and I don't need to tell you what happened next. ;-)

We had decided in the evening to exchange rings the next day, figuring that perhaps the Chinese New Year might bring us good luck. In the morning, we had a delicious brunch at the Landfall Cafe (after making excellent use of the facilities at the Tides again) and then we headed out to Fort Flagler to hit the beach. We walked along the Lighthouse Beach in the wind and the rain, in complete rain gear and running up and down the beach like crabs to avoid the huge crashing waves rushing up the sand. We chanced the tides and walked around the corner of the beach so that we were in the quiet area downwind of the big cliffs.

And we got all romantic and mushy and laughed about trying to not get our feet wet when the waves rushed up to us and then we exchanged rings. It wasn't even so much what we said but being there together and wanting to always be together. And we will be.

We'll get married late this summer or in the spring/early summer of next year. It's important to us to be able to gather our friends and family together and then to have a great party. Both of us have been married and divorced once and we're crystal-clear that this is it; we're getting married and staying married this time. I wouldn't even consider it except that I really believe we can do it. We've both learned and grown and are so clear about what we want out of our lives together, and so much of what we each want is identical to the dreams of the other that it's a little spooky.

We're going to move into a house together with our girls as soon as we can this spring. I love John with all my heart and can't wait to bring our lives together all the time. And the wedding planning will go on from there.
